The Unfulfilling Nature of Adult Sick Days

little-house-on-the-prairieWas there anything better when you were a kid than a sick day?

Not the “My head is going to explode”/”Oh my God, I have to change my underwear” sort of sick but those days where you only felt mildly like crap. Those days when your parents’ greater concern was trying to avoid spreading the plague to your classmates (And instead likely passing it along to them).  Not necessarily you feeling like death warmed over.

What I call “sorta sick” days.

Those were the days where you could watch crappy daytime TV (At my house, it was usually All My Children or reruns of Little House on the Prairie, because Mom), but at least you weren’t one of those suckers at school.

Being sick as an adult has some perks, but just doesn’t seem to have the same charm it did when I was a kid.  All this came to mind this past week, when I came down with the stomach flu and had time to think.

  • When I had the flu as a kid, things somehow magically stayed clean.
  • I still only have one TV, but I now have a tablet which allows me to watch any show I want at any time. If you’re curious, I watched a lot of educational programming on the History Channel like Ancient Aliens.  No Little House on the Prairie.
  • Chicken soup from a can is always amazing. Unless it’s low sodium.  If you like low sodium, you’re a horrible person.
  • When I was younger, I never thought about what work I should do at home to stay on schedule at school. Not the case with working as an adult.
  • Stomach flu is an amazing weight loss system.  In three days, I lost four pounds.  I also had absolutely no urge to drink alcohol.  I assume those things are completely unrelated.

Finally I also learned that the one thing I do not feel like doing when I’m sick is writing, hence this relatively lackluster, lazy blog post.

The end.
